The route
Five days based in Amsterdam, then south by train to Ghent for the last three. Day trips branch off each base.
Every stop pinned in one Google Maps list. Opens in the Maps app on a phone, so it's there when you're standing on a street corner wondering which way.
Open ↗Day by day
Times are local. Weather and daylight update every time this page opens; days beyond the two-week forecast fill in as we get closer. Anything marked "open" is still ours to decide.
Delta 9168, overnight from Terminal E.
Landed, bussed in, and walked straight into the Canal Parade.
Nineteen windmills, by train and boat.
The private tour, then the Torture Museum on Singel.
Whatever we picked on the morning.
1AmsterdamMorning · getting out
Train · Amsterdam Centraal → Antwerpen-Centraal
Arrives 10:30. Check out first, then tram 1 or 2 from Leidseplein to Centraal — allow a good half hour on the platform.
2Antwerp10:30 – ~18:00 · on foot
One loop out from the station and back, about 3.5 km of actual walking spread over the whole afternoon. No fixed times below — just the order. Eat and stop for coffee whenever it suits; the only clock that matters is the cathedral closing at 17:00.
3GhentEvening · three nights
Train · Antwerpen-Centraal → Gent-Dampoort
Nothing to book. Belgian domestic trains carry no seat reservations — buy a ticket and take whatever is leaving. Direct, about 47 minutes, every half hour, last one around 21:36.
Check in · 1898 The Post
Aug 5 – 8. Dampoort is the closer station, and the same one we leave from on the 8th.
Laundry on, then dinner next door
Wassalon Lavendel sits on Oudburg, and Oudburg is one of the better eating streets in Ghent — which is the whole trick. Load the machines, walk twenty metres, have dinner, collect the washing on the way back. Four days in, this is the evening for it.
Pick a city and go
Nothing booked. Ghent is on the doorstep, Bruges is about 25 minutes by train and Brussels about 30 — all of them turn up several times an hour with no reservation needed. Decide over breakfast.
One more, then home tomorrow

Pack. The train out is early.
09:02 from Gent-Dampoort, and the flight depends on it.
Train · Gent-Dampoort → Antwerpen-Centraal
Arrives 09:54. Dampoort, not Sint-Pieters — check which station before you leave the hotel.
Train · Antwerpen-Centraal → Schiphol Airport station
Arrives 11:33. Thirty-six minutes to change trains in Antwerp.
Delta 257 · Amsterdam (AMS) → Boston (BOS)
Lands in Boston at 4:37 PM the same day. Schiphol asks you to be there three hours ahead — the train gets in at 11:33, which works, but don't linger.
Where we sleep
One on a busy Amsterdam square, one in a converted post office on the water in Ghent.
Minutes from Leidseplein and the edge of the Vondelpark, with the museums a short walk south.
